05/21/2017Pastor Stan Nelson Behavior in the Church
1 Thessalonians 5:12-15
In this last part of chapter 5, Paul gives several reminders to the Thessalonians about what is expected of growing Christian. These are very practical areas which are important for every believer to focus on. Note that Paul is not giving a deep theological dissertation on each of these areas. Instead he is giving an overview about what the life of a mature believer should look like. We can use the areas Paul discusses to evaluate our own walk with the Lord. A mature believer is a believer who faithfully practices these and other principles from the Word in his daily life. As we go through the following reminders, think about your own life and which area or areas you need to grow.

1 Thessalonians 5:4-11
An understanding of the Rapture and the Second Coming of the Lord should affect how we live our lives. We are not of this world, just as our Savior is not. This should show in the moral quality of our lives, in our values, priorities, and pursuits. Paul uses several analogies in this passage to illustrate this: light versus darkness-day verses night, sleep versus not putting it on, and wrath versus deliverance. Prophecy, then, is not designed to satisfy our curiosity or an urge for the sensational. Its design is to motivate us to holy living.

1 Thessalonians 4-13-18
The Thessalonians rightly understood that Christ was going to return; however, they had not considered the possibility that some of their loved ones and friends would die before it occurred. They, therefore, plunged into deep grief. Doubts filled their minds as to the status of these preliminary deceased believers. All sorts of questions were going through their minds.

04/16/2017Pastor Stan Nelson The Power to Change
Philippians 3:10
We go to seminars and conferences looking for a painless cure by which our lives can be zapped and changed. We go on diets. We join health clubs and our enthusiasm runs strong for about two weeks. Then we fall back into the same old rut. We don't change. We read self-help books, but the problem with self-hep books is that they tell us what to do but can't give us the power to do it. We are told things like: 'Get rid of all your bad habits. Be positive; don't be negative.' But how? Where do we get the power to change?
